Thomas Joseph Mercier
Age 75, of Lapeer, Michigan passed away on Sunday, March 8, 2026. In accordance with his wishes, cremation has taken place. Expressions of sympathy may be shared on Thomas’ tribute wall at detroitcremationsociety.com.
Thomas Joseph Mercier was born on August 23, 1950 in Grosse Pointe Farms, Michigan the son of Howard and Louise (Van Ermen) Mercier. He graduated from Eastern Michigan University and was a proponent of continuing education throughout life, accumulating many certifications related to medical studies, SCUBA diving, and outdoor skills.
‘Captain’ Tom was an avid boater, outdoorsman, and sportsman of the Great Lakes. Early in life he would spend time on his father’s boat, and eventually on a boat of his own, the ‘Sudden Impulse’. He would SCUBA dive shipwrecks, caves, and ice diving in the winter.
His outdoor interests were hunting, fishing, muzzle loading (historical French Canadian reenactments), wilderness survival, and camping. With his family, he drove the Alcan Highway from Michigan to Prudhoe Bay, Alaska and back, camping along the way throughout Canada and the US west.
Tom had a diverse career as a Computer System Programmer, owned a SCUBA Dive Shop, and worked roles in the medical field (Paramedic, Hyperbaric Technician, and Offshore Medic).
He is survived by his children, Danielle, Travis, and Nicole. And grandchild. His sisters, Susan and Jean. As well as several nieces and nephews.
Thomas was preceded in death by his parents, and his brother Mark.
