Spencer Thomas Gettig III was born on December 22, 1952, in Detroit, Michigan, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Spencer Jr. and Anastasia (Grzywna) Gettig who preceded him in death. Spencer was a good and loving man whose family meant everything to him. Time spent with loved ones always brought him much joy. Spencer was a skilled and hard working man, having worked over 50 years primarily as a Tool & Die machinist and at one time a business owner. He was adept at fixing and building things around the home as well as industrial items. He loved nature and enjoyed a variety of outdoor activities including camping, nature walks, bird watching and gardening. Spencer was an avid fisherman and hunter with pheasant and waterfowl being most enjoyed. The annual “guys” duck hunting weekend was always a much anticipated and loved event. Over the years, Spencer’s many skills and interests included; wrestling, football, swimming, archery and exploring the natural side of Michigan. He loved to sing but often joked that he “could not carry a tune in a bucket“ and proceeded to sing anyway.
Spencer is survived by his beloved wife; Kathryn Gettig, three children; Stacey (Jason) Holman, Spencer IV (Christina) Gettig and Michael (Rhonda) Gettig; three grandchildren; Kelsey Gettig, Spencer Gettig V and Kortney Gettig, three siblings; Maryanne Douglas, Charles Gettig and Patricia Gulan. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Spencer will be remembered for his gruff and sometimes grumpy ways of speaking but anyone who loved him knew this was simply to hide the most soft, kind, and loving heart. Spencer will be deeply missed by his family and many friends.
