Sandra L. Pope (Horner)


Sandra L. Pope (Horner), age 83, of Grand Blanc, Michigan, passed away on Thursday, March 28, 2024, at Brookdale Assisted Memory Care Center. She was born on June 30, 1940, in Keokuk, Iowa, to Kenneth and Almeda (Thrush) Horner. Sandra attended schools in Keokuk, where she once achieved the highest state score on the Iowa standardized testing, earning her recognition for her academic achievements. Sandra was a dedicated advocate for workplace rights and successfully brought a union into her workforce, serving as the union steward.

Sandra’s greatest joy in life was her eight children. Known for her nurturing spirit, Sandra opened her heart and home to all who needed her, including many of her children’s friends. Her grandchildren held a special place in her heart, and she took pleasure in sharing her interests with them, from playing cards to her love of horses to reading grand novels. Sandra will be remembered as a woman of humor, a resilient fighter, a devoted mother, grandmother, and wife to the love of her life, Dan Pope. She was a woman of selflessness and loyalty to those she loved.

Survivors include her daughters, Anna (Orlando) Goetz and Jennifer (Roger) Goetz; her sons, Joe (Kathy) Goetz, Pat (Amy) Goetz, and Chris (Michelle) Goetz; 20 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, many nieces, and nephews; sisters: Nancy (Harold) Hoeferle and Suann (Wendell) Guthart; brother: Kenneth (Pam) Horner; and sister-in-law, Bonnie (Larry) Horner.

Sandra was preceded in death by her husband, Daniel Pope; sons, Johnny Anderson, Scott Goetz, and James Pope; brother, Larry Horner; parents, Kenneth and Almeda Horner; daughter-in-law, Kathy Goetz; brother-in-law, Harold Hoeferle.

Memorial contributions honoring Sandra can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association by visiting (https://alz.org). Arrangements were made by the Detroit Cremation Society, and expressions of sympathy may be shared with the family on Sandra’s Tribute Wall at detroitcremationsociety.com. Per Sandra’s wishes, there will not be a service, but we might sneak a word in at Scott’s Memorial in the summer.

    Rest in peace, Sandra, my big sister!🙏. I can only imagine the reunion up there with your dear Dan, Scott, lLarry, Mom and Dad being all whole and well again. rejoicing with Our Lord.     Sad to lose you but glad to know you have eternal rest with Dan, Scott and so many loved ones of our family. You sure will be missed greatly by your caring children. We will miss our annual visit to Michigan seeing you, Wendell and I will miss you.! Will see you one day… love you-Suann
