Joyce Shirley Barbara Ann Childs was born on February 1, 1935, in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richard and Eula (Gandy) Childs. When she was sixteen, the family emigrated to the United States. Joyce became a naturalized U.S. Citizen on June 12, 1958.
The great love of her life was Harry Arnberg. They married on September 8, 1956, at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Allen Park. Before their marriage, Harry was diagnosed with MS. Even so, they enjoyed forty-four loving years together, including many adventures, chiefly due to Joyce’s patient and devoted care. Their pets were the children they never had, especially a Belgian Shepherd mix named Dama.
Joyce began her career with the Department of Defense, and then worked until retirement as a designer for General Motors. She was a talented artist, known for her art and her handmade gifts for friends and family over the years. She was especially proud of a caricature art poster she was commissioned to make for a General’s retirement. A copy of it hung in her studio.
Joyce and Harry owned land in Crawford County near Roscommon, and spent as much time at Ferncrest as they could. After Harry passed, she built the well-known “round house” on M-18. Joyce felt a great connection to the trees, the skies, and the birds and other wildlife there. In Roscommon, she worked at ROOC/COOR with kids and adults with special needs, and hosted art and meditation classes as well as spiritual retreats in her home.
Joyce is survived by her sisters-in-law Susan Argiroff and Jeanette Blakley; nieces Kathleen Gomoll (Glen), and Annie Flood (Frank); nephews Richard Garland (Jackie), Paul Garland (Jenn), Jim Garland (Karen), Michael Czarnik (Becky), Randall Czarnik(Dorothy), Gary Czarnik (Shelly), Phillip Argiroff (Beth), and Sean Blakley (Lisa); and many great nieces and great nephews.
Joyce is preceded in death by her husband Harold Arnberg and her sister Eula Garland.

Aunt Joyce was a truly good person, and I am glad to have known her. Her devotion to her community and those she loved was strong. Any time a person so beloved is lost it is sad, but we were also so lucky to have her example to live by.
I Charlene Garcia miss Joyce a lot. She was a member also of the Red Hatters of Eldorado . Roscommon, MI. She was a joy to that lovely lady. She will be missed.
