Janice Gale Mills


Age 73, of Ypsilanti, Michigan (formerly of Flint, Michigan) passed away on January 17, 2024. In accordance with her wishes, cremation has taken place. Expressions of sympathy may be shared with the family on Janice’s Tribute Wall at detroitcremationsociety.com.

Janice Gale Mills was born on June 30, 1950, in Altoona, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John and Betty (Hershberger) Hockenbury. Janice and her family left Pennsylvania in the late 1960’s and moved to Fenton, MI. She attended Fenton High School and graduated in 1968. She met Ronald Mills in high school and they were later married in 1969 (they were divorced later in life). Janice and Ronald raised a son, Ronald “Ronnie” Mills Jr. (Age 53 of Ypsilanti, MI) and a daughter, Tammy Carr (Age 51 of Inverness, FL). Janice worked in the automotive industry starting out at Schmelzer’s Brakes in Durand, MI (now closed) and lastly at the General Motors Service Parts Operations plant in Swartz Creek, MI until she retired. During her retirement years, Janice enjoyed watching her grandchildren play soccer, cheerleading, and attending their ballet dancing recitals. She was an avid collector of Coca Cola memorabilia and antique salt and pepper shakers. Janice enjoyed the company of her dog, Lucky, for many years. Janice also spent several years volunteering for the Genesys Hospice program where she took pride in helping to comfort patients.

Surviving Janice are her brother John L. (Marilyn) Hockenbury, sister Debra Hetherington, ex-husband; Ronald (Cheryl) Mills, son; Ronald Mills Jr., daughter Tammy Carr (fiancé Shawn Howard), four beautiful granddaughters; Ashley (Brandon) Skorna, Natalie Mills, Emily Carr, and Sydney Mills, handsome grandson Nick Garrison-Carr, former daughter in-law Diana Mills, former son in-law Jim Carr, and her best friend for over 40 years, Katie (Pritt) Handy.

Janice is preceded in death by her mother Betty Hockenbury, uncles Ray B. and Charley N. Hockenbury, former father in-law Rudolph Mills, brother in-law Kenneth Hetherington, second “mother” Sylvia (Hardy) Hockenbury, former mother in-law Dorothy Mills, aunt Sarah Stuver, and her father John Hockenbury.
