James Arthur Steele
James Arthur Steele, age 79, of Dafter, passed away on April 7, 2026. He was born on August 29, 1946, in Sault Ste. Marie, the son of William and Louise (Bourguigond) Steele.
James was a proud veteran of the United States Army and a man known for his integrity and honor. He retired from General Motors after many years of dedicated service. In his free time, he enjoyed ice fishing, shooting, mowing his lawn, tending to his garden, and taking great pride in caring for his home. He also loved traveling on the road with the band and spending time with his beloved wife, Phyllis, who was truly the love of his life.
James is survived by his loving children: Sharon Steele (Jason), Michael (Jane) Steele, Thomas (Kelly) Steele, and step-daughter Mary Lynch (Mark). He was a proud grandfather to MJ, Paul, Cody, Hayes, Cole, and Ellison, and great-grandfather to Sophia, Nora, and Eleanor.
He is also survived by his sisters, Lavon Goeschel and Janet Crisp; brothers-in-law Carl Avery, and Gordon Goeschel; along with many nieces and nephews. He will be deeply missed by all his special friends.
James was preceded in death by his parents, William and Louise (Lawrence) Steele; his stepfather, Wilmer “Slim” Lawrence; his siblings Beverly Avery, Richard Steele, and Audrey Lawyer; and his wives Nora Steele, Cynthia Steele, and Phyllis Steele.
James will be remembered as a devoted father, grandfather, and friend—truly the greatest dad in the world—whose legacy of love, strength, and character will live on in all who knew him.
A celebration of life will be held at the VFW Hall (Sault Ste. Marie) on May 29, 2026, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Final resting place is at Rapid River Cemetery, Masonville Twp.
