Charlene Ann Combs

Charlene Ann Combs of Holly, Michigan, passed away on November 26, 2023 at the age of 86.

She was born on June 24, 1937 in Pontiac, Michigan, firstborn daughter of the late Jesse and Evelyn Simmons. Charlene is survived by her three sons, Daniel Rollman, Stephen Rollman and Christopher Rollman (father the late Richard Rollman) all of whom take comfort in knowing that their beloved mother is now living eternally in the arms of Jesus and celebrating with indescribable joy having been reunited with all of her family and friends who have passed before her.

She is also survived by her two younger sisters – Beverly (Stone) of Weatherford, Texas and Carol (Tabor) of Shawnee, Oklahoma, two grandchildren – Ashley and Michael Rollman (mother Andrea wife of Stephen), and many extended family, friends and neighbors who knew and loved her dearly.

Affectionately known in recent years as ‘Gramma Char’, her welcoming kindness and generous spirit will be especially missed, only to be preserved by our memories of her until we see her again at her new home in heaven.

Charlene grew up in Waterford, MI and graduated from Waterford Township High School in 1956. Her association and devotion to the local church, at the time Sunnyvale Chapel, is undoubtedly how she came to know and love so many people in the community but most importantly her savior Jesus Christ.

In 1977 she became employed by Oakland County (MI) and soon after took a job with the Oakland County Sherriff’s Department where she worked as a communications agent (dispatch) and records clerk. After 10 years with OCSD, her old high school sweetheart, the late Larry Combs who was widowed since 1985, knew she’d been living alone for 14 years and invited her to come to California in 1987 for a visit. They were married in 1988. Larry retired from the Oakland Unified School District (CA) in 1992 and had purchased a retirement home in Paradise, where Charlene thrived in the community doing such things as volunteering at the Feather River Hospital, working for the Butte County Sherriff’s Department and various other part time jobs and retiree activities. After Larry’s sudden death in late 2004, Charlene packed up and left Paradise to return to her family in Michigan where she has lived until her recent passing.

Some of her favorite things, other than visiting with her grandchildren, friends and family, were her cats, whale watching and collecting various types of dolphin and whale figurines.

A celebration of Charlene’s life will be held sometime in the spring-possibly late May or early June.

An update will be posted when a date has been determined.
