With heavy hearts, we share the passing of our beloved Barney and Marlene Smith, who went home to be with the Lord within just weeks of each other in 2025. They shared 68 wonderful years of marriage. High school sweethearts, their love story began in Detroit and endured a lifetime.
Together, Barney and Marlene raised four children: Dale (Carolyn), Carol, Gary (Patty), and Connie (Mike). Their love expanded to include 14 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. They were so proud of them and loved to brag about them! Family and friends were the heart of Marlene and Barney’s life. They treasured time spent with their family and friends, whether at family gatherings, holidays, or simple everyday moments. They especially loved camping trips together at their son Dale’s campground in Traverse City, and in Florida at McDill Airforce Base where they made countless cherished memories together.
Marlene was a gifted singer who loved singing hymns. She was also known for her skill in sewing and crafting, creating many beautiful keepsakes over the years. Her sweet personality, kindness, and loving ways touched everyone who knew her and always brought a smile to those around her.
Barney was a patriot, proudly serving his country in the U.S. Navy, Air Force, and Army Reserve, retiring as Master Sergeant E-8. He also dedicated his career to teaching music as a band director, inspiring countless students. Barney loved life on the open road, whether on his motorcycle, traveling the country with Marlene in their RV, sailing with his son Gary or enjoying a cup of Wendy’s Chili and conversation, with his daughters Carol and Connie. Barney and Marlene leave behind a legacy of faith, family, and love. They will be deeply missed but remembered always for their devotion to one another and the joy they brought to the lives of so many. Our family takes great comfort in knowing that Barney and Marlene’s faith was strong and that they are now at peace with their Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and in the presence of our Almighty God in Heaven.
