Barbara Ann Lewis

Barbara Ann Lewis passed away on November 12, 2023, at the age of 85. She was born July 15, 1938, in Paducah, Kentucky, the daughter of Everett “Rueben” and Mary Durham, a bit of a miracle baby as her mother was told she would never bear a child. She moved to Jackson, Michigan at a young age and resided there virtually all of her life. She eventually met her future husband Otis Lewis, with whom she raised three children, creating a very closely bonded family. Barbara spent most of her career in the banking industry, the last of which was SCSECU where she was a loan manager. She spent many happy years there surrounded by her much-adored co-workers, many of whom she befriended, cared for and mentored.  Barbara retired in 2001 and began celebrating her retirement years with her beloved friend Frank Nichols, riding snowmobiles, and traveling.

Barbara spent the latter part of her life doing what she loved the most, spending as much time as possible with her family. She loved playing with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Telling stories and having fun. She enjoyed her football games and was partial to Michigan State.

Barbara was always the life of the party, making jokes and playing games. She was a euchre champ and very much enjoyed a glass of fine wine on occasion. She was by far the best daughter, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, cousin, sister, and friend anyone could have ever hoped for. Everyone who knew her was inspired and deeply touched by her presence. She will be forever missed.

Barbara is survived by her brother Darrell (Sheryl) Durham, sister Karen (Ray) Bristow, sister-in-law Leah McCourtie, son Jeff (Lori) Lewis, daughter Lisa (Melissa Weisberg) Lewis, daughter Valerie (Bill Suggs) Lewis and many wonderful cousins, grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and very dear friends.

Barbara is preceded in death by her mother, Mary (Wilson) Storm, her stepfather Carroll Storm, father Everett Rueben Durham, her former husband, Otis Lewis, and her beloved partner Frank Nichols. In accordance with her wishes, cremation has taken
place, and a celebration of life will take place at a later date. Expressions of sympathy may be shared with the family on Barbara’s Tribute Wall at detroitcremationsociety.com.

Anyone wishing to honor Barbara’s memory may direct donations to Cascades Humane Society 1515 Carmen Dr, Jackson, MI 49202, or Jackson Animal Shelter 3370 Spring Arbor Rd, Jackson, Michigan 49203, or Mid-Michigan Hospice 1020 Professional Dr. building A suite 5, Flint, Michigan 48532.

I met Barb working at SCSECU and quickly became friends with her. She was so much fun and truly a joy to be around. We lost touch for a while, then found each other on Facebook. It saddens me to hear of her passing, and I’m so sorry for the loss her family is feeling and pray for comfort, strength and peace to all.

To the Family I am so sorry for your loss. I worked with your mother at South Central Credit Union. She was such a nice person. I was transfered to the branch in Adrian. We would fax Jokes to each other. She loved the Blonde jokes. She was a great friend. And she loved her family.
