Lawrence Arthur LaPointe Sr., age 77, was born on September 28, 1947, in Marquette, Michigan, to Charles and Nellie (Ogea) LaPointe.

In 1968, Lawrence was drafted into the United States Army and proudly served in Vietnam as a radio operator. During his time overseas, he became known for also giving haircuts to fellow soldiers. While serving, he faithfully corresponded by mail with Theresa, the woman who would later become his wife. Together they built a loving family and shared many years together before Theresa’s passing in 2010.

Lawrence dedicated many years of his career to quality control before retiring. Around 2015, he met Patricia McGaffigan, and the two quickly became inseparable. They embraced life together fully, always working on projects, laughing often, and finding joy in everyday moments. With Patricia’s infectious optimism and Larry’s endless dad jokes, they were cherished by everyone who knew them. They were married on September 14, 2024.

Lawrence and Patricia spent countless hours training their beloved German Shepherds, Kymber and Baron. He enjoyed hunting, collecting marbles and antiques, cooking and baking, and continually perfecting his recipes—though he remained his own toughest critic. He was also proudly known as “the best one in his spot.”

Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Patricia McGaffigan; his son, Lawrence (Kathryn) LaPointe Jr.; grandchildren, Lawrence (Elizabeth) LaPointe III, Madison LaPointe, and Lauryn (Jared) Knizacky; and great-grandchildren, Paisley and Ansleigh LaPointe.

He is also survived by his siblings, Mary Wilson, Laura (Gene) Hanycz, Ronnie (Tanaya) LaPointe, Tommy LaPointe, and Carl LaPointe, along with many cousins, nieces, nephews, and dear friends.

Others who held a special place in Lawrence’s life include his hunting buddy and nephew, Tommy King; the Smith family; Paul Connelly; his McDonald’s buddies, who still keep his seat open; and all those who lovingly considered him “Grampa.”

Lawrence was preceded in death by his first wife, Theresa LaPointe; and his daughter, Wendy (William) Knudsen.

Lawrence will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. In accordance with his wishes, cremation has taken place, and he will be interred at Great Lakes National Cemetery without a formal service.
