Chancy Joe Sowards


Age 83, of Alger, passed away on Tuesday, April 14, 2026. In accordance with his wishes cremation has taken place. Expressions of sympathy may be shared with the family on Chancy’s tribute wall at detroitcremationsociety.com.

Chancy Joe Sowards was born on October 12, 1942, in Tango, West Virginia the son of Mr. and Mrs. Oscar and Bertha (Jeffreys) Sowards.

Left to cherish his memory are his daughter: Deborah (Brian) Shayler; his grandchildren: Stephanie, Robert, and Heather; many great grandchildren; and his very special great granddaughter: Isabella.

Chancy was preceded in death by his wife: Bonnie Sowards; his parents: Oscar and Bertha Sowards; and all of his siblings.

    Uncle Joe will be missed. Memories are there from childhood to adult of Joe, Bonnie and the kids. He was always larger than life. He appeared and everyone was in a good mood. He built our house along with his brother Denver who was my dad, John Rose his nephew and my Brother Todd. I’m grateful for all he did for our family and love Joe and his family. They all are missed.

    I knew Joe most of my young life he was my dad’s half brother.
    I always thought he was the cool’s guy I knew, when he left it was years before I saw him again.
    My dad’s family just seem to drift to every corner of the US.
    This is the last of my dad’s family.rest in peace uncle Joe !!
