Mattie Ruth Kemp


Mattie Kemp, a beloved daughter, mother, and grandmother of Grand Blanc, MI, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 11, 2025 at the age of 71. Mattie was born September 2, 1953, in Clayton, Mississippi. The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R.L. and Lula (McGee) Warren, she was a woman of God and a true inspiration to all whose paths she crossed. Mattie Ruth Kemp dedicated her life to the Church from a young age and served her ministries well. She was a faithful employee of Hawkins Adult Foster Care where she dutifully took care of the residents for 12 years. She was a positive, godly model to her children and grandchildren, always encouraging them to pursue their dreams. Mattie Ruth Kemp was also known for her powerful singing voice, using it to spread God’s word and uplift everyone within earshot.

Left to cherish her memory are her 4 daughters and 1 son, Chandrika Warren of Grand Blanc, MI, Glendona Warren, LaToi Haralson, and Keilani Kemp of Flint, MI, and Sydney Kemp of Atlanta, GA; 16 grandchildren, Kezia, Nigere, Jourdan, Chloe, Calvin, Mikhail, Delani, Micah, Nehemiah, Kyle, Sarah, Isis, Israel, Skylar, Gab’reil, and Caleb; 16 great-grandchildren, Kylan, Kelaiah, Andre, Mi’Ayre, Gerald, Cailey, Kylee, De’sire, Nasir, Kayden, Amiri, Sanaa, Kaia, Naomi, Ta’Lani and Karter; 6 step-children, Erskine, Deshawn, CarMona, Wanjura, Wonjewel, and Latase; mother, Lula Mae Warren; 5 sisters and 2 brothers, Joyce (Byron) Richard, Doretha (Jessie) Russell, Tammy Warren, Ted Warren, and Darrilyn Warren of Flint, MI, Terri Warren of Savannah, GA, Robert Warren of West Memphis, AR; 1 sister-in-law, Gloria Kemp, and a host of relatives and friends.

Mattie Ruth Kemp was preceded in death by husband, Roy Kemp; grandson, Machi Richardson; father, R.L.Warren; brothers, Cornelius McGee and Edward Perkins; nephews, Tyler Edwards and Darryl Russell; and pastor/uncle/friend, Steve Hawkins.

Funeral services will be held at the Detroit Cremation Society, 8253 S. Saginaw St. in Grand Blanc on Friday March 21, 2025, public viewing will take place at 12:00 pm, with the service at 1:00 pm. Pastor Carl Johnson will officiate. In accordance with the family’s wishes, cremation will take place. Expressions of sympathy may be shared with the family on Mattie’s tribute wall at detroitcremationsociety.com.

The family would like to express special thanks to Kyle Lynch, Amanda Verrette, Ondrea Kersten, and Gabrielle Ezell all of Heart-to-Heart Hospice; staffs at ACTIVE Adult Day Health Club and Maple Woods Manor; El Shaddai Ministries; Mattie’s granddaughter Isis; and close family friend Dee Walker for all the support and love given to Mattie in her time of need, and our family in our hour of sorrow.

    Mattie was and always will be one of my favorites. Her smile, dancing, “shut up” and “ love you” definitely brightened our day! I am going to miss those visits so much! I feel blessed that I was able to be part of her care and had the opportunity to share in her life. Chan you did an amazing job taking care of your momma!
