John James Gettmann was born on January 12, 1936, in Satus, Washington, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred and Mildred (Turner) Gettmann. He was a man of many talents; there really wasn’t much he couldn’t do. His passion was flying Cessnas over the jungles of West Papua, Indonesia, with Mission Aviation Fellowship; he flew for MAF for over 12 years which included teaching pilots to be bush pilots. Later, he taught aviation at Mendocino Junior College in California, and at LeTourneau University in Longview, Texas. He was also an airplane and car mechanic, an insurance agent, a house builder, a carpenter, and an estimator for a construction firm, just to name a few of his talents. His greatest joy was his family, but his two greatest loves were his Savior, Jesus Christ, and his wife of almost 65 years.

Surviving John is his wife; Gwendolyn Gettmann, his son; James (Linda) Gettmann, his four daughters; Cheryl (Ronald) Jarvi, Susan (Michael) Sherfield, Lynda (Leon) Goorabian, and Cynthia (John) Orito, his sister; Beatrice Mattern, his brother; Bob (Beverly) Gettmann, as well as three nieces, 1 nephew, 17 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

John was preceded in death by his parents, and his brother; Ed Gettmann.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made “In Memory of John Gettmann” to Mission Aviation Fellowship, PO Box 47, Nampa, Idaho 83653, Phone (800) 359-7623 (donor services) or donations can be made online at Missionaviationfellowship.org.

What a talented devoted man of God he was! He will hear “ well done thou good and faithful servant”. His building talents can be used some day in the heavenly city of God. May you and the family feel peace and comfort that only Jesus can give until you meet again!
    Love, Sue Jeffes

A sad time for all his family but he is at peace with the Lord.
Miles apart but was always close to our hearts .

Such a sweet man who loved his family. I felt like the “5th” daughter for years! He would give us (usually Lynda and I) a grin and a chuckle when we would come back to the house and tell what we had done that evening. So thankful for your family! Praying for you all. Love, Tanya

John was certainly a man who loved the Lord. I appreciated the wisdom he shared in Bible Study and the example of his life.
