Dolores was born in Flint, Michigan, on September 5, 1936. She was the mischievous baby of the family, who often tricked both parents into giving her money to go to the Capitol Theatre on Saturdays. She was a proud graduate of Flint Central High School where she made friendships that lasted a lifetime. In July 1956, she married her husband Jim and the two raised a family of four. Her first job was as a telephone operator, then a stay-at-home mother, and from the mid-1980s until she retired, Dolores worked in various businesses in customer service, including an answering service, a hair salon, and a travel agency. Dolores was an outgoing, independent, adventurous extrovert who made friends everywhere she went. She was a past member of the altar guild at St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church and Flint Elks Lodge 222. For many years she bowled and golfed, but after retirement, she and Jim were often found in a casino where she inexplicably came home a bit richer than when she left. She began attending local senior centers and discovered a wonderful new group of friends and played cards three to five times a week. Dolores never met a vegetable she liked, but to be fair, she never actually met that many. She had a very close relationship with her caregiver, Miryea Fajardo, who was like a daughter to her. She was a second mother to Deon Delduca, whom she adored. She and Jim shared a long and close friendship with Richard and Jennifer McLean of Davison. And in her final years, one of her highlights was hosting sleepovers with her great-grandchildren Cidonia and Silas.
She is survived by her son Dan of Burton, MI; daughter Becky of Grand Blanc, MI; daughter Kristie of Seattle, WA; grandson Stephen (Nadrah) and great-grandchildren Noah, Jonah, and Sofia of Grand Blanc, MI; grandson Timothy (Holly) and great-grandchildren Teddy and Hannah of Albuquerque, NM; grandson Kyle (Elyse) and great-grandchildren Cidonia, Silas, and Amos of Flint, MI; grandson Justin (Sarah) and great-grandchildren Erik and Finn of Olathe, KS.
Dolores was preceded in death by her husband James T. Higgerson; father Emil Knapp; mother Cidonia Gazso Knapp; sisters Mary Knapp Schmidt and Irene Knapp Furkas; brother Andrew Emil Knapp; and son Ronald D. Higgerson.
